Our second trip to this extraordinary country with "Villageways" including a 5 day trek through the norther region of Tigray. Although near the equator, the height of this region means a pleasant cool climate for walking. This is one of the poorest countries we have visited- most life is in villages and the altitude and climate means that much of the land is not very productive and most of the agriculture is subsistence farming with little surplus left to sell. One of the most extraordinary things about the country is its rich Christian roots; the deposed Emperor Haile Selassie was said to be a direct descendant of Solomon and the Queen of Sheba and a small side chapel of The Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion claims to house the original Ark of the Covenant.
